The castle of Riau, classified historic building,
date of the 15, 16 and 18th centuries.
As the burrows preserved at the castle
since 1308 attest it, the seigniory of Riau has already, at the beginning of 14th
century, an important place in the history of Bourbonnais.
Together
rare and typical of architecture bourbonnaise of the 15th and 16th centuries,
Riau, built on a feudal mound, is surrounded by water running ditches. One reaches
the court of the castle by an imposing control tower flanked of two turrets. Apart
from the endceinte draws up one of most remarkable and of most curious the "dîmière"
barn than one can see today in France.
In
the 15th, Charles Popillon, Minister of Finance of Anne of France, and its descendants
will embellish the castle during three centuries. The family of the admiral Antoine
de Charry des Gouttes succeeded to them in the 18th century. In 1826 Jean Rene
Roy de Chevigny, then prefect of the Allier, bought it. Its descendants live there
still today.
Rooms
and apartments furnished with 18th and Empire. Beautiful collection of paintings
of Emmanuel of Villéon, post-impressionist painter.
