The
La Palice castle |
|
The town
of Lapalisse is situated on the banks in the Besbre and is overlooked by the tall
silhouette of its chateau. The northern part, with the "Maréchal"
(marshal) tower, and the meridional wall of the chapel, are typical of a X IIth
and XIIIth Century construction. The main central part was built in the XVIth
century by Jacques II de Chabannes, the famous Monsieur de La Palice, known for
his "vérités" (truisms but also as Field Marshal).
The chateau has been inhabited by the same family since 1430, is entirely furnished,
and displays numerous historica! souvenirs. Particularly remarkable are the Heroes
tapestries of the XVth century, the golden drawing-room and the chapel whose crypt
houses the Chabannes vaults. __________________________
