The
chateau of Busseol was built in in 70 on the remains, which are still visible,
of a IIth Century Gallo-Roman castrum at an
altitude of 700 m, on a volcanic
dyke overlooking the Limagne.
This formidable fortress belonged successively,
from its beginnings, to illustrious people : the Counts of Auvergne,
Pope
Alexandre III, Jean Stuart Prince of Scotland, and was raised to the status of
royal residence by the Queen of France,
Catherine de Médicis, Countess
of Auvergne who stayed here with her son Charles IX in 1566.
The
chateau has preserved its military character which enabled it to stand up to the
siege of Philipp Auguste in 1215, to the attacks by the Black Prince's soldiers
during the 100 years war, as well as to the attack of the Duke de la Rochefoucauld,
chief of the Ligueurs in 1595.
In the main room the visitor can admire
an exceptional XIIth century circular fireplace, antique furniture, arms and
armour from feudal times. There is a surprising banging garden with a magnifient
view over the countryside from
the Forez mountains to the Sancy mountain-range.
