The Valprivas castle

The Chateau of Valprivas already existedin 935 and the Renaissance part has remained intact. The castral chapel, which was "re-consecrated" in 1493 has kept two important mural paintings produced at the beginning ot the 17th century by painters from the Pierre Paul Rubens workshop, and who had settled in Lyon after working on the Chateau of Fontainebleau.

In the 16th century Vaiprivas was the home of Antoine Verd du Verdier, Lieutenant General of the Kingdom for the Lyon region, friend ofthepoets of the"'Pléiade"and author of the "Bibliothèque Françoise". The chateau was sequestrated during the Revolution, and then sold as "part of the national heritage" at the onset of the Restoration period; it was itself restored as from 1963 by the Cultural Centre which has its head office here and holds activities all year long.
