This
fortress, which can be found perched on a hillock five kilometres South-East of
Billom, is the home of the powerful Montmorin family. It was an important XIIth
and XIIIth century defence, the first surrounding wall having been restored.
The fortified door which bas a tower on either side of it and machicolation is
particulary interesting.
On the left tower the visitor will notice the look-outpost with its fireplace.
The watch-tower backing on to the curtain wall is open to the public. The visitor
can see, in four rooms, rich collections of arms and furniture from the XIIIth
to the XVIII th centuries. The common room depicts Auvergnat life. One can also
inspect archeological findings from the site.
There is a panoramic view over the Limagne and la Chaîne des Puys (mountain-range)
from the ramparts. It is a classified ancient monument.
